What is civil legal assistance?

Civil legal assistance is legal advice and representation in cases that are not punishable by imprisonment. Click here for types of cases we may be able to assist with.

How do I qualify for legal assistance?

  • You must have a problem that has a legal remedy.
  • You must have a legal problem that can be resolved through the Kansas courts.
  • You must be the plaintiff or defendant in a Kansas court action.
  • You must be eligible for free or reduced fee legal assistance. Please call our toll-free number below to see if you are eligible.
  • You must call 1-800-723-6953 to apply for legal assistance.

What Kansas Legal Services cannot help with:

  • Criminal Cases
  • Traffic Cases
  • Accident Claims
  • Personal Injury or Wrongful Death Suits
  • Representation to Prisoners (we can provide legal advice to prisoners in civil matters only)

What if I don’t qualify for KLS assistance?

  • If you have been charged with a crime, you should ask the District Court to appoint an attorney for you. Click here for a listing of District Courts in Kansas

  • If you are not eligible for KLS assistance, you may call the Kansas Bar Association’s Lawyer Referral Service (1-800-928-3111). Staff of the Lawyer Referral Service will provide you with the names and contact information of attorneys in your area who specialize in area of law you have a question about.
