Understanding Kansas Small Claims Court: What You Need to Know
Kansas small claims court was established in 1973 to provide a simple, informal procedure for people to settle smaller legal problems cheaply and quickly. Americans have always had the right to represent themselves in a courtroom. In small claims court, the parties represent themselves on small legal matters without attorneys.
KLS has a form you can create that will request a waiver to filing fees (asks to not have to pay the fee) for any legal situation that requires you to pay a fee. If you do not have the funds for the filing fee, you can use this form to ask not to pay.
This is an interactive interview that will take you through the form, and then will create the form for you to download.
Facing a Summons? Here’s How to Prepare for Your Court Case
If you get a summons saying that you have been sued for a debt or another reason, you should do the following:
Learn what type of case you are involved in.
The simplest way is to look at whether the summons gives you a specific date to appear in Court.
The Kansas Attorney General's office, separate from Kansas Legal Services, has several special divisions to protect Kansans in many ways. The office has a division called Consumer Protection to help protect consumers from fraud and exploitation and educate Kansans on their rights and responsibilities as consumers.
