What is tax-related identity theft?
As you may know, Kansas Legal Services is part of the national legal aid movement that was born in the War on Poverty in the early 1960s. KLS grew out of the movement that believed everyone deserved equal access to justice, without regard to their ability to pay for services.
The National Legal Aid and Defender Association (NLADA) has a film about the history of civil legal aid in the United States on their website.
This site is the starting point for all unemployment claims. It explains the procedure and allows you to apply on-line. You can also submit your weekly claim forms through this site. it's the first place you should go when you lose your job.

How do I report fraud if I received a 1099-G form for a fraudulent claim in my name?
If you received a 1099-G form for a claim that you did not receive payment for due to identity theft, you can fill out a request on the KDOL Self-Service Portal under “1099 Protest/Dispute," making sure to check the box for “I want to dispute my 1099” and declare you did not receive the benefits that were stated on your 1099-G form issued from the Kansas Department of Labor.
The Federal Trade Commission site includes tips on how to protect yourself, as well as things to look for when spotting a scam.
